Food Tank

Gastronomica:  With its diverse voices and eclectic mix of articles, Gastronomica uses food as an important source of knowledge about different cultures and societies, provoking discussion and encouraging thoughtful reflection on the history, literature, representation, and cultural impact of food. The fact is, the more we know about food, the greater our pleasure in it.

Films

Dive! (2011):  A lot of perfectly edible food goes to waste when stores throw it out (think unsold bread at the end of the day and produce just past its expiration date). The director of this film hopes to convince you that while diving into your local dumpster is a viable source of food, the real problem resides in the country's attitude towards waste.

Farmageddon (2011): The film focuses on the struggle of small
local farms that are forced to cease operation by the government. The New York Times called it "part consumer-rights advocacy, part abuse-of-power exposé."

Food, Inc. (2008)This documentary addresses the issue of corporate farming in America. There are three acts, tackling industrial meat production, large-scale production of vegetables and grains, and the ways in which economic and legal power is wielded in this country to product big business.

Food Fight (2008)Director Chris Taylor presents a look at the counter-culture movement in agriculture. Featuring interviews with politicians and chefs—such as Alice Water and Dan Barber—the film shows how quickly the culture of eating has changed in the past few decades.

Forks Over Knives (2011)This film is heavy on the science and takes a strong anti-animal product stance on eating. You have been forewarned. Still, check it out for an interesting look at how what we eat affects the rise in incidences of coronary disease, diabetes, obesity, and other diseases.

Fresh (2009): This film is really a celebration of farmers, thinkers and businesses striving to re-invent America's food system. Among the people profiled are urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award, and Joel Salatin.

Ingredients: The Local Foods Movement Takes Root (2009): You'll find thought leaders of the locavore movement like Alice Waters and Peter Hoffman dropping knowledge in this film illuminating the dangers of America's industrialized food system.

King Corn (2007): Two friends from college move to Iowa to grow America's most versatile crop (corn) and make a movie about it. As they chart their journey, they dig into big issues like government subsidies for agriculture and the nation's addiction to high-fructose corn syrup.

Soul Food Junkies (2013): Baffled by his dad's unwillingness to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity.

Supersize Me (2004): Spurlock filmed his experience of eating nothing but McDonald's three times a day for an entire month. He tracks his mood swing and physical health, and checks in with other Americans who subsist largely on soda and burgers.

The Future of FoodThe Future of Food offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.

The Harvest (2011):  This movie chronicles young migrant children who harvest the American produce that we eat.
