This was a very interesting read as we have recently been talking more about food safety and how effective the FDA is in maintaining safe food practices and regulations.
1. Do you think the FDA is entirely at fault for these apparent issues or are others possibly responsible, such as FDA permit manufacturers?
2. What do you think the FDA should do to quell of these rampant gaffes in their lack of regulation in many food safety realms?
4 Ways the Food and Drug Administration Is Not 'Protecting and Promoting Your Health'
This article was extremely eye opening; I did not know that about Tylenol. I absolutely think that the FDA is at fault for these issues. They are supposed to protect our health, and clearly they have failed in some sense. FDA permit manufacturers also hold some responsibility, but the FDA hold more of the responsibility for allowing it. The FDA should be more strict about the things talked about in the article including additives, etc. but also with their research. I think that actually regulating food safety could help repair this issues.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked at the fact that the people who are determining whether or not food additives are safe, are people who have deep ties to the industries that make the additives. So that leads me to believe that many of the things that I consume that include food additives might only be called "safe" because the people are biased. I was shocked and kind of grossed out when I read the part about other people's stool being used in patients who have extreme stomach problems. I believe it grossed me out because any type of talk about fecal and stool is frowned upon in society, but if the stool helps to save someone's life, I do not see a problem with the procedure as long as the proper health and safety procedures are performed. The article talked about how the FDA is focusing more on problems like feces and stool that are saving people's lives who, without the feces, are suffering, but they are letting people determine whether or not food additives are safe even if there is a serious conflict of interest. GMO's have been a big topic of discussion in 2013, but I do find it disturbing that the FDA is not performing their own safety tests on the organisms, but instead, just going by what the companies, who are making the GMO's, say. This is once again, another bias situation and it is also an extreme conflict of interest.

ReplyDeleteI do not think the FDA is entirely at fault for these apparent issues. The media has done a great job at placing the blame in their hands entirely. The FDA manufacturing regulations play the most significant role in influencing the current issues surrounding our food system.
2. What do you think the FDA should do to quell of these rampant gaffes in their lack of regulation in many food safety realms?
The media is in charge of the majority of the public opinion concerning FDA issues. However, I feel that the FDA could take several steps toward improving public opinion. For example, increasing early notifications from manufacturers can have a positive impact on drug shortages. Another example concerning drug shortages would be to address potential root causes of the shortages through research.
